The district production department is responsible for Agricultural extension services accruing from the Ministry of Agriculture animal industry and fisheries.
Coffee is one of the most significant cash crops grown in Kakumiro District, located in the Bunyoro Sub-region of Western Uganda. It plays a crucial role in improving household incomes, promoting agro-based employment, and contributing to Uganda’s export earnings. Kakumiro lies in a tropical climate with fertile soils and favorable rainfall patterns, making it ideal for coffee cultivation, particularly Robusta coffee, which is best suited for the region's altitude and climatic conditions.
Importance of Coffee
- Coffee provides a major source of income for smallholder farmers.
- It supports thousands of rural households through production, processing, and trade.
- Contributes to Uganda’s coffee export volumes.
- Funds education, health care, and other domestic needs.
Coffee Wilt Disease (CWD) and Leaf Rust are common threats.
Use of resistant varieties and proper sanitation are common control strategies.
Coffee farming in Kakumiro District holds enormous potential to drive rural transformation and economic empowerment. With targeted investments in capacity building, disease control, infrastructure, and market development, Kakumiro can become a leading hub for quality Robusta coffee in Western Uganda.
